Backup Job
Backup Job
A Backup Job is a task executed by the SqlBak Agent, either on a schedule or manually from the SqlBak Server web dashboard. Backup jobs are configured on sqlbak.com.
A Backup Job performs the backup of a specified data source, which can be:
- a Database Management System (DBMS) such as SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL, or
- a folder (file-level backup).
One SqlBak Agent can have multiple backup jobs. Each backup job belongs to only one SqlBak Agent.
If you want to use the same job on another agent, you can either transfer it to a different agent (by editing the job and clicking the edit icon next to its name) or clone the job.
General workflow of a backup job:
The SqlBak Agent performs the following steps:
- Connects to the backup source and verifies its availability.
- If the source is a DBMS, it retrieves information about the server version.
- If the backup all databases option is enabled, the list of databases is also retrieved.
- Decides on the backup type (Full, Differential, Incremental).
- Creates the backup. The exact procedure depends on the type of backup source.
- Prepares the backup for uploading to storage (compresses, encrypts, splits into chunks).
The original backup file is deleted after preparation. - Uploads the prepared backup to all configured storage destinations.
- Deletes the local copy of the uploaded backup file.
- Retrieves from SqlBak Server a list of outdated backups that should be removed from storage, according to the cleanup rules defined in the job.
- Deletes the outdated backups from the storage.
- Notifies SqlBak Server to send reports about the job results.
- Sends the final job execution report to SqlBak Server and completes the process.
Additionally, scripts defined in the Scripts section of the job settings may be executed.
The execution step depends on the Trigger Action specified for the script Execution Timing settings.
The actual sequence of steps may differ from the one described above if a custom Job Execution Mode is set in Backup Job Options instead of the default mode.
